Sounds like you copied data files offa  dvd or CD?
Obviously, if you have the original DVD it would make things easier...

.dat files could be anything -- virtually just a long series of bits.
Without the metadata associated with it, it's not going to be easy to
recover the original format to play it much less convert it to some
other well-known format.
