Hi Marc, thank you for sharing this great music theory courses.

I’ve done both courses and appreciate very much. The didactic material and Marc’s lectures are handy indeed. I do recommend.

Assunto: [Menvi-discuss] new online courses for learning harmony and basic theory

Hello! The subject of accessible music theory courses comes up here from time to time, and I have some new offerings in this area, so if you're interested in this, read on.

As I related here, a few months ago I released an online course called Basic Music Theory to teach the fundamentals of pitch, rhythm, notation, intervals, and scales, and took some trouble to make it as accessible as I could. It's not a course in Braille but in music generally, and it actually uses standard notation. But all handouts are in MuseScore, which is screen-reader-friendly (on WIndows or Linux, not so much on macOS unfortunately), and in any case the course is primarily video-based and I do try to explain things in ways that don't rely on being able to see the video or handouts.

The main reason I writing today is to announce that I also have a more advanced course, picking up where Basic Music Theory leaves off. The new course is called Harmony and Chord Progressions, and it covers the principles used in combining chords. I take a broad view of this, looking at harmony in terms of history of Western music, from classical to folk to jazz to rock. The focus is on showing you how to apply these principles to your own music regardless of genre. The course format is similar tot he Basic Music Theory course - handouts that are readable in MuseScore, but primarily, the course is based on videos where I do my best to explain things without assuming you can see what I'm talking about.

With both courses, I solicited feedback from blind users during development, and I've tried to incorporate as many of their suggestions as I could. I remain open to further suggestions - I'm constantly tweaking things to improve further in all respects (accessibility as well as content). So I am confident that if you're interested in studying the subject matter, you'll find these courses valuable.

Finally, I am also launching a free resource called the Music Master Class where I teach live on Thursdays (12:30 PM Eastern) via streaming video, and you can participate via chat. This is less structured, so I would not think of it as a way to learn theory so much as a way to *enhance* your learning. Because it's live, I can't necessarily promise I'll always be mindful that not everyone can see what I am doing, but I can promise I will always try, and that I'll appreciate
