Michelle:

As a teacher of VI students, I encourage my students to learn how to read
music. Learning how to read music encourages independence and being
self-sufficient. Learning by ear requires you to depend on someone or
something else. The idea of reading and playing will always be a
challenge. Many professionals memorize their music for performances, so
your learning to reading braille music will require you to memorize your
music and require you to perform like many professionals. Each person
memorizes in different ways, but reading music for everyone requires you to
reading music as patterns and not individual notes. Patterns of 8 beats
would be your first step. I encourage you to advance to patterns of 16
patterns as your goal. I hope this helps.
