Occasionally, literary parentheses pop up in music, whether or not it was actually allowed (I’m smiling as I type this!). It can be confusing and annoying, but I usually tell students to look for octave signs to find out where the literary stuff ends and the music resumes when there aren’t blank spaces to help the reader out.

I have another question about a symbol I am encountering in the Suzuki Violin School Volume 1 & 2 which I got through Web Braille from NLS. 

 

Instead of using the word sign (dots 345) before a word or expression in the single line music, the word appears to be enclosed in what I have always known to be literary braille parenthesis or brackets (dots 2356).

 

I’m just wondering if at any point in time the braille music code allowed transcribers to use literary parens instead of the word-sign in the middle of music for a word expression ? While it hasn’t tripped me up in the reading & understanding of the music, when I find what I think is an outright error it kind’a sets my hair on end especially since a library volume should have gone through a proof reading process. 

 

Thanks for any explanation of why I’m encountering the difference from what I had learned.
