[Menvi-discuss] question about NLS braille music digital files

Embossing.
Well, it can get messy. Let me slightly restate what I wrote earlier. NLS files are standardized for up to 40 cells per line and up to 25 lines of text/music, with a 26th line always blank, followed by a page break.

That means that a given page always has 26 lines, even if 25 of them are blank.

The first and earliest scores that were posted to web-braille, now BARD, probably do not always fit these guidelines. We have not systematically gone back and checked them. In addition, some of these same old and early braille scores have up to 45 cell lines. We make changes to conform to the standard whenever we are alerted to the offending files.

So, please write nlsm at loc.gov if you think you have a score that falls outside of the specifications that I have summarized here. We will fix it right away and email you directly the re-edited score.

I am sure I have overlooked some details here, but will wait for someone to uncover them before seeking more work voluntarily.

There are possibilities of several variations. Some I know of have around
18 lines and others have 28 lines and fewer characters. I'm convinced there are quirks in the Duxbury importer but nobody believes me. Sometimes I give up and use the DOS copy command, if that works, or something that sends the file, however it is, to the embosser port. If it's not for anybody else, it may be easier just to give in and settle for a long page followed by a short one, or whatever.

I guess I have one of the one percent. Most of my files import fine, but I
have a couple that don't, which is why I asked the question. If 99 percent
of your files are 25 by 40, what are the other one percent?
