Hi, Winy.
I looked at my MENVI mail stash and found these two messages.

Sarah G. writes:
"I am a sighted musician who has accompanied ballet classes for
children's and college level classes. I started at a studio that had
blind accompanist before me so it's quite possible for you to do and
it's fun to play for dancers. You might check out the Royal Academy
of Ballet syllabus. I doubt any of the music is in braille but it is
all recorded. Each exercise has a set piece of music that will give
you an understanding of the kind of music required for each movement.

A quick dance musician tip: When musicians are asked to play
"square", we play without rubato. Ballet music is based on 8 bar
phrases and exercises are generally multiples of 16 bars long (16,
32, or 64 bars long) depending on the exercise. Ballet dancers call
this "square". "Square" in dance means multiples of 16 bars, not
playing at a steady, even pace, and dance teachers do not always know
this. Dance teachers usually know what meter and tempo they need for
a particular exercise, some may even sing or hum a rhythmic or
melodic fragment, but they may or may not know about the phrase
structure. It took me several weeks to figure this out and
understand why the music I played didn't fit the timing of the exercise."

Ayaka I. writes:
" You are going to have so much fun. Depending on what sort of ballet
music
you will be accompanying, it's extremely important to have a very good
rhythmic sense. Dancers really rely on the beat. So, it's completely
different from accompanying solo instrumentalists or opera. Sometimes, I
was given the tapes that the dancers have been rehearsing with. It was
important for me to not to move or change the tempo, or play differently
from the tape since the dancers were already used to the recording's tempo,
and practiced their choreography according to the tempo of the particular
recording."

HTH,
Dani

braille--help

Hi all,
I plan to be pianist to accompany ballet exams from grade 6 to 8 in a ballet
school here. They use "Higher Grade Syllabus Music" from The Royal Academy
of Dance. The author is Carolyn Parker. I tried to search in RNIB website
but it seems to me that they are not brailled yet. Does anyone know where I
can get them in braille?
Are there anything that I should pay attention to accompany ballet?
does visual queue take significant role? Input, suggestions, ideas will be
highly appreciated. Many thanks.
Winy.
